What does it all mean? |
To help you understand the terminology used relating to setting up a website, we have listed some useful definitions below:
Domain Name
This is your identity on the world wide web. For example, the domain of this site is www.DiamondWebServices.co.uk
Due to the popularity of the web, domain names are constantly being purchased but to increase availability they are
now available with more 'extensions' such as .co.uk; .com; .org.uk; .tv; etc.
The character limitation for ordering a domain is 59 characters; the only symbol that is allowed to be present in a domain name is a hyphen ( - ) any other symbols (such as $ or % ) cannot be used in the naming of a domain.
Whois
A Whois record displays information regarding the owner of the domain. When you register a domain you must provide contact information such as your name, address and telephone number. This
is shown your whois record and can be viewed by anyone using the web. For your security, Diamond Web Services recommends that you opt to request that your personal details are omitted from the whois record when registering your chosen domain.
Hosting
To set up a website, it is not sufficient just to register a domain name, you must also start a hosting account.
A hosting account is often created by another company that provides webspace that is paid for on an
annual basis. Other services such as email accounts, website statistics, guestbooks and website counters are all provided as a service by the hosting company.
Pop3 Email Addresses
When you set up a hosting account with a domain name, you are often provided with the option of setting up pop3 email addresses. These are configured in your
Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express to receive any emails sent to the address. For example, if you purchase the domain www.house.co.uk and set up a hosting account,
you could also set up a number of email addresses such as bob@house.co.uk or jane@house.co.uk
Webspace
When you set up a hosting account, depending on the package chosen, you will be allocated an amount of space such as 100MB. This is the maximum amount of data
that you can store on your website including all webpages, texts and images. This limit can of course be extended at any time if it looks like you may exceed the limit.
Bandwidth
When you set up a hosting account, depending on the package chosen, you will be allocated an amount of bandwidth such as 3000GB. This is the maximum amount of data
that can pass through the hosts servers per month and includes all emails, webpages, texts and images. This limit can of course be extended at any time if it looks like you may exceed the limit.
Control Panel
When you set up a hosting account, the host often provides you with access to an online control panel. Through this control panel, your email accounts and additional website features such as a counter or guestbook can be managed.
Web usage statistics are also available via the control panel.
HTML
HTML stands for Hyper Text Markup Language. This is the programming language that the majoruity of websites are written in. There are many other types of language available
such as Flash and Java.
